The Most Common Fireplace Repairs We Do
Interior tuckpointing (repointing the firebox joints)
This is the repair we do most often. The mortar joints inside the firebox take a beating. Every fire cycles the temperature from cold to extreme heat and back again. Over time, the high-temperature cement that holds the interior brick joints together deteriorates and starts to crumble. When that happens, the joints need to be cleaned out and repointed with the right high-temperature mortar, not regular mortar, which won’t hold up to the heat.
Damper replacement
A damper that won’t open and close properly is both a functional problem and a safety issue. In most cases, a damaged damper can’t be repaired. The metal warps or the mechanism fails beyond what’s worth fixing. The solution we use most often is a top-mounted damper cap, which installs at the top of the chimney and replaces the function of the original throat damper. It seals tightly when closed, keeps rain and animals out, and opens fully when the fireplace is in use.
Insert panel replacement
Wood stove inserts have refractory panels on the sides, back, and bottom of the firebox, and Wisconsin’s temperature swings are hard on them. The constant cycle of heating and cooling causes these panels to crack and deteriorate over time. When they go, we cut replacement panels to the exact dimensions of your unit and install them. It’s one of those repairs that’s straightforward when caught early and more complicated if the damaged panels are left in place too long.

Most of the time, clients aren’t calling us specifically about a fireplace repair. They’re calling for a cleaning. When Rick does a sweep, he inspects the firebox as part of the service. That’s when he spots deteriorating mortar joints, cracked panels, or a damper that’s not working right. He shows the client what he found, explains what it means, and if they want it fixed, it often gets done the same visit.

Is it safe to use the fireplace if there are small cracks in the mortar joints?
Small hairline cracks in the mortar joints are common and don’t necessarily mean immediate danger. But cracks that have opened up, especially if you can see daylight through them or mortar is actively crumbling , mean combustion gases including carbon monoxide can move through the firebox wall. Don’t use it until it’s been inspected and repointed.
Can I use regular mortar to repair the inside of a fireplace?
No, and this is one of the most common DIY mistakes we see. Standard mortar and concrete aren’t rated for the temperatures inside a firebox and will fail quickly. Firebox repairs require refractory mortar specifically designed for high-heat applications. Using the wrong material looks fine at first and fails within a season.
How do I know if my refractory panels need to be replaced?
Hairline gaps between panels are normal. Manufacturers build in slight expansion gaps to accommodate heat movement, and those don’t need to be sealed. What does need attention: visible cracks running through a panel, chunks missing, or panels that are warped or discolored from water damage. Cracked panels allow heat to reach the metal firebox directly, which can cause warping and, in prefab fireplaces, create a fire hazard in the wall framing behind it.
What’s the advantage of a top-mount damper over the original throat damper?
A top-mount damper seals better than most original throat dampers. It sits at the top of the chimney rather than inside the firebox, which means it also functions as a cap to keep out rain and animals. It’s more energy efficient (no cold air dropping down when the fireplace isn’t in use) and eliminates the corrosion problem that affects metal throat dampers from moisture exposure over time.
How often should the firebox be inspected?
Every year, ideally as part of an annual sweep. That’s when Rick checks the mortar joints, the refractory panels, the damper operation, and the overall condition of the firebox before the heating season starts. Most of the repairs we do were caught during routine cleanings, not emergency calls.
